Bulgarian Nationalists Threaten to ‘Block’ Border with Turkey over Refugee Wave
A marginal Bulgarian nationalist party has threatened to “block” one of the country’s border checkpoints with Turkey as a sign of protest against the increasing Syrian refugee influx.
The VMRO party has claimed in a press release that Turkey has been deliberately transferring illegal immigrants to Bulgaria.
The nationalists have announced they would “block” the Kapitan Andreevo border checkpoint with Turkey on Sunday, September 22, starting at 1:00 pm EET.
Bulgaria authorities are undertaking measures to accommodate all potential refugees that might arrive from Syria seeking shelters from the devastating civil war conflict.
Bulgarian officials have said the country may have to provide shelter for as many as 10,000 Syrians by the end of 2013.
