Bulgaria's Education Minister, Aneliya Klisarova, pledged better work conditions for Bulgarian teachers and higher State stipends for college students pursuing teaching degrees.

Klisarova spoke before Nova TV Sunday, one day ahead of the official start of the school year in Bulgaria.

The traditional date is September 15, but since it falls on the weekend, Bulgarian schools will open doors Monday.

The Minister noted the age of teachers was a serious problem and a challenge and promised the government will launch a number of incentives to attract younger people.

She explained the State not only planned to up the stipends for college students preparing to become teachers, but was also negotiating a benefits package for young educators.

Staff development will include workshops on modern teaching methodology.

Klisarova rejected reports that school principals will have terms in office, saying they will be only assessed in a new way.

"Until now, school principals were given marks only by regional inspectors. We want to include in this process parents, students, teachers and the entire community," she stated.

Klisarova will be in the Black Sea city of Varna Monday for the official first day of school.
