US battle ships have received an order to remain in the eastern Mediterranean for possible military action against Syria.

At the same time, the Russian Smetlivy frigate, together with a landing ship, has sailed off from Sevastopol to take part in an increasing Russian fleat around Syria's coasts.

US Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel has personally ordered Tomahawk carrying ships to remain prepared for action, according to ITAR-TASS.

Russia and the US have initiated a diplomatic effort to avoid an American strike on Syria by placing the country's chemical weapons under international control.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has used an op-ed in the New York Times to warn the US public against the dangers of unilaterally striking Syria.
