Czech people in the capital Prague have appreciated the creative Bulgarian apology for the crushing of the Prague Spring 45 years ago.
On Wednesday, the controversial monument of the Soviet Army in the downtown of the Bulgarian capital Sofia was colored once again, this time in honor of the Prague Spring.
The Monument "woke up" with the Red Army soldier figures painted in pink and with the inscriptions in Bulgarian and Czech "Bulgaria apologizes" ("Bulharsko se omlouv?").
After reporting the news, Novinite.com received an email and photo from Prague in which the author wrote that the picture illustrated his friends' response to Bulgaria's apology.
The photographs show young women holding signs written in the Cyrillic alphabet, reading "Thank You" in Bulgarian.
The sender explained the picture was taken in Prague Wednesday, on Wenceslas Square.
"Me and many people in the Czech Republic really appreciate the gesture you made. It means a lot. Greetings to Bulgaria," Lukas Kraus wrote from Prague.
He also posted the photo on the Novinite.com Facebook page.
August 21st marked the 45th anniversary of Soviet crackdown on the Prague Spring.
The Prague Spring was a period of political liberalization in Czechoslovakia during the era of its domination by the Communists and the Soviet Union after World War II. It began on January 5, 1968, when reformist Alexander Dubcek was elected the First Secretary of Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, and continued until August 21, when the Soviet Union and all members of the Warsaw Pact, with the exception of Romania, invaded the country to halt the reforms.
On that night an estimated 5 to 7 thousand Soviet tanks and 300 000 – 500 000 soldiers occupied part of Czechoslovakia for a month. Nearly 100 people died and 600 were injured.
Bulgaria was the first country to insist on the invasion and the last one to apologize for its participation – with a declaration of the Parliament in 1990 and in 1997 during the visit of right-wing President, Petar Stoyanov, to Prague.
The Soviet tank, which was the centerpiece of the memorial of the Soviet Army in Prague, has been painted in pink several times, first in 1991 by famous Czech artist David Cerny.
Wednesday, August 21, was not the first time when the monument of the Soviet Army in Sofia has been decorated.
The most famous "decoration" of the monument so far happened in June 2011, when a group of street artists painted the bronze figures of Soviet soldiers to represent various US pop culture characters, turning them into The Joker, Wolverine, Santa, Superman, Ronald McDonald, Captain America, Robin, and Wonder Woman, among others.
There have been several other paintings as well.
The latest "decorators" remain unknown for the time being, and it is unclear exactly when the "decoration" was carried out.
