The Greek government is expected to adopt on Monday a decision for or against the opening of a new border crossing point on the Bulgarian-Greek border.

The Makaza border crossing will connect Bulgaria's cities of Haskovo and Kardzhali to Greece's Komotini and Alexandroupolis.

The border crossing point is part of cross-European Corridor #9, which connects Greece to Finland and Russia.

The opening of the Makaza border crossing is expected to boost tourist trips between Bulgaria and Greece and to significantly alleviate traffic at the other border crossing points on the Bulgarian-Greek border.

Its launch however is being delayed as Athens insists that it is open only for cars and buses, while Sofia demands that heavy long vehicles, up to 5 tons, are also allowed to pass through.

At a regular sitting on last Wednesday, Bulgaria's government gave the green light to the launch of the border crossing point and also reviewed a draft agreement with Greece on providing joint control for it.
