EU Diplomats to Hold Emergency Meeting on Egypt
Senior EU diplomats will hold an emergency meeting on Monday to discuss the rapidly deteriorating situation in Egypt and consider possible EU action, the office of EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton has said.
The diplomats may decide to summon the bloc's foreign ministers to Brussels for a further emergency meeting next week.
Earlier this week, Egypt's military leadership, which overthrew the democratically-elected Muslim Brotherhood last month, cleared protest camps organised by the Brotherhood throughout Egypt, European Voice reminds.
At least 600 people have been killed in the resulting clashes. The military government has declared a state of emergency.
EU High Representative Catherine Ashton said in a statement on Wednesday: “I call on the security forces to exercise utmost restraint and on the interim government to end the state of emergency as soon as possible, to allow the resumption of normal life."
