Daniel Mitov Ready for Foreign Minister Role Amid Geopolitical Test in Bulgaria
Daniel Mitov, Deputy Chairman of GERB, has expressed his readiness to assume the position of Acting Foreign Minister
Bulgarian ultranationalist party Ataka (Attack) is set to help override the veto imposed by President Rosen Plevneliev on a controversial budget revision, according to a key official of the Socialist-led coalition.
Yordan Tsonev, MP of the ruling predominantly ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS), has told the Bulgarian National Television that Ataka would oppose the veto, as the contrary would lead to early elections.
Tsonev, who is head of the parliamentary budget commission, has noted that Ataka is determined not to allow the center-right GERB party of former PM Boyko Borisov (2009-2013) to return to power.
Last week, Plevneliev announced he had imposed a partial veto on the Law on Amending and Supplementing the State Budget Act for 2013, saying the Socialist-led coalition government had not shown enough transparency in its use of public money.
The extremists from Ataka have so far informally backed the ruling coalition between the Bulgarian Socialist Party and DPS.
Thursday marks the 63rd straight day of anti-government protests in Bulgaria. The massive rallies were triggered by a number of highly controversial appointments and wider concerns about corruption.
