US Drone Strike Kills 6 at Least Al-Qaeda Suspects in Yemen

A US drone strike killed at least six suspected Al-Qaeda operatives in Yemen's southeastern province of Maareb on Thursday, according to officials.

It is the sixth drone strike in Yemen in less than two weeks.  The US has repeatedly used drone strikes in recent years to target members of Al-Qaeda.

The latest strike follows Yemen's announcement on Wednesday that it had foiled a plot by Al-Qaeda to seize two major oil and gas export terminals and a provincial capital in the east of the country.

The heightened strikes parallel the temporary closing of US embassies and consulates in the Middle East and Africa over fears of an imminent terrorist strike, CNN reminds. The United States on Tuesday urged all Americans to leave Yemen.

It was unclear whether this week's strikes were related to the security alert in place in the country since US officials intercepted a message from Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri to operatives in Yemen telling them to "do something."
