Bulgarian Socialist Party MP Zhelyu Boychev said he and his colleagues feared for their lives while trapped in a bus stormed by rioters Tuesday night.
The heady events happened during Tuesday's siege of Parliament, during which police tried to rescue part of trapped lawmakers using a bus.
The vehicle however had to turn back, as it was blocked by protesters and pelted with rocks and pavement stones, which broke some windows.
"We felt that if we remained in the bus, the crowd would have torn us apart. I think this is a very natural reaction," Boychev told the Bulgarian National TV Sunday.
"That night we had violence and confrontation hard to imagine in Bulgaria," added he.
The parliament blockade was part of ongoing protests demanding the resignation of socialist-backed Bulgarian PM Plamen Oresharski.
Although this is the first and for now last time that protesters have resorted to violence, their otherwise peeaceful rallies have abounded in diverse hate speech.
"This is an alarming situation. You cannot lash outat someone just because she is of a different opinion. Nothing is achieved by throwing stones and bottles," said Boychev.
However, he added that the ongoing political crisis and attacks will actually aid in consolidating his party.
He was critical of some moves by the Oresharski cabinet, but defended the Bulgarian Socialist Party's position that resignation now would mean throwing the country into chaos.
