For an 18th consecutive day, protesters gathered in front of the Council of Ministers building and the President's Office in downtown Sofia, as well in other big cities, to demand the resignation of the socialist-led Cabinet.
By 8.30 pm on Monday, the rally in Sofia was attended by some 5500 demonstrators yelling "Mafia", "Resign" and "Red Thrash," according to reports of Interior Ministry, as cited by the Focus news agency.
The disgruntled citizens carried banners reading "Freedom or USSR", "Stealing is not enough, you've got to have brains", "Oresharski, You Have Grown Dependent on Citizens Too", etc.
One of the protesters carried a bird cage with a photo of the leader of the Bulgarian Socialist Party, BSP, Sergei Stanishev inside it and another one brandished a shovel, with which he vowed to take politicians out of their trenches and bring them to justice.
No disturbances of public order were reported by 8:30 pm.
The peaceful anti-government demonstrations in Bulgaria were triggered by the appointment of notorious media mogul Delyan Peevski as Chair of the State Agency for National Security (DANS).
The decision was eventually reversed, yet protesters went on to demand the resignation of the socialist-led government over ties with oligarchs, an end to opaque policies, and Election Code amendments aimed at guaranteeing a greater representation of Bulgarian citizens in the government.
