Bulgaria’s socialists are trying to scare people into accepting their government by saying that the former rulers are waiting just around the corner, a newly elected right-wing leader argues.
“The Bulgarian Socialist Party, BSP creates an impudent manipulation by saying that the center-right Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) party, will return to power. This is a sort of "scarecrow," the new Chairman of rightist party Democrats for Strong Bulgaria, DSB, Radan Kanev said on Monday.
“Bulgarian citizens obviously do not see GERB as an alternative to the current government. Borisov’s party can’t beat the results he scored at May elections,” Kanev said for state-owned TV channel.
In his opinion, the Socialists will have to pay dearly for their "political stubbornness.”
"BSP may have shown stubbornness, we already saw that, but they will pay a huge price for it. I won’t comment on nationalists “Ataka” party at all, and when it comes to the Movement for Rights and Freedom party, DPS, – they may save their electorate, but they have lost most of it already. The reason for this is the backstage collusion with Ataka,” Kanev added.
According to his words, even when democracy is just a facade, politics still feeds on trust.
"The Cabinet "Oresharski” has not gained any public trust yet and thus immediately has to resign," he also said.
"The ruling party is afraid that if it falls from power it will not be able to implement major reforms, including the ones for the Election Code and for the Euro funds. But without trust they cannot implement them anyway,” Kanev said.
According to him, the only alternative for the voters, should new elections be held in the short term, is a right-wing union.
Radan Kanev made it clear that this should not happen as a union of already existing formations but should be “very seriously built - in a block, not in a coalition."
"A block is a general unit with its own leadership, and is consisting of many non-party people," he explained.
Kanev commented that the "recipe" for overthrowing the ruling is the "hardening" of the protest.
"This does not mean that we need to become bullies, but we need to see the unions, the professional organizations, the strong local communities in the demonstrations - there is much more to be done," he said.
Radan Kanev has been elected chair of rightist party Democrats for Strong Bulgaria Sunday following the resignation of longtime leader and former Bulgarian PM Ivan Kostov.
Kanev's candidacy was approved with an overwhelming majority, with 459 votes "for", 12 "against" and 6 abstentions at DSB's national convention in Sofia.
The young leader has vowed to forge ties to other small parties and restore what many view Bulgaria's "traditional" or "authentic" right.
