Bulgarian Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski and his Romanian counterpart Viktor Ponta will be among the officials present at the launching ceremony of the second bridge over the river Danube between Bulgaria and Romania on Friday, June 14.

Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev, Transport Minister Danail Papazov, Parliament Chair Mihail Mikov, as well as Romanian Cabinet members and European Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn will also take part in the ceremony, according to the Bulgarian Transport Ministry.

It was reported last week that a “surprise person” would cut the ribbon at the official ceremony.

Danube Bridge 2 linking Vidin in Bulgaria and Calafat in Romania is part of the Pan-European transport corridor IV.

The project was started in the late 1990s, but was stalled multiple times.

The only other existing bridge between the two Balkan neighbors, Danube Bridge 1 linking Ruse-Giurgiu, was completed in 1954.
