Protest Erupts in Sofia Demanding Interior Minister's Resignation
A protest unfolded in front of the Interior Ministry headquarters in Sofia on Monday, as citizens demanded the resignation of outgoing Interior Minister Kalin Stoyanov
Bulgaria’s embattled former Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov will be interrogated by the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office in relation to high-profile wiretapping allegations.
The interrogation is to take place at 10 am Wednesday, it has been made clear.
On Monday, Tsvetanov told reporters that he would show up for the interrogation and would not attempt to obstruct justice.
He once again protested his innocence, claiming he “never violated the law.”
Tsvetanov is accused of failing to exercise proper control over Interior Ministry officials, thereby enabling the unauthorized deployment of special surveillance equipment against high-profile politicians, magistrates and businesspeople.
The former Interior Ministry was stripped of his immunity as lawmaker earlier this week.
If found guilty, Tsvetanov faces a penalty of up to eight years in prison.
