Croatian Ruling Party Triumphs in Elections, Tough Negotiations Ahead
In a widely expected outcome, Croatia's ruling conservative party, the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), emerged victorious in the parliamentary elections
Sensible political leaders will need to throw aside their differences and come together after May 12 elections as a counterpoise to former ruling GERB party, stated Bulgarian Socialist Party leader Sergey Stanishev.
In an interview for Dnevnik.bg, Stanishev vowed to lead his party to victory at the vote, reaffirming his position that only the Socialists can topple GERB's domination.
However, he said that he will rely on the support of other parties for the proper operation of the next cabinet, for which the Socialists have proposed financial expert and ex FinMin Plamen Oresharski as a PM.
"What Bulgaria needs today is not a one-party government. Didn't we witness, for the last 3.5 years, the effects of a monopoly on power by one party?" said Stanishev, referring to center-right GERB rule following the summer of 2009 elections.
"We need an opening up, we need a rule with the talent of the whole nation; perhaps a program cabinet which will report to society on a regular basis, a cabinet featuring experts implementing a program sporting a broad parliamentary support," explained the socialist leader.
According to Stanishev, many of the ills of the rule by GERB stem from the concentration of power at the hands of few people, who according to him proved both ruthless and incompetent.
The socialist leader refused to go into detail of the recently exploded 'Watergate' scandal, in which top GERB actors were implicated either in illegal spying or other abuse of power.
He professed his disgust at developments, saying that Bulgarians are fed up with the matter and need to start thinking about boosting the economy and improving the qualities of their lives.
"The scandal demonstrates that what GERB did was only to snoop around. That is why they failed so miserably in all other areas," said Stanishev.
The socialist leader devoted special attention to the situation with businesses in Bulgaria, which according to him were "crushed by state racketeering" during the time of the GERB cabinet.
He promised to terminate that practice and implement a number of stimulus measures intended to revive the economy.
