Council of Europe Urges Greece to Ban Neo-Nazi Party

World | April 16, 2013, Tuesday // 16:57

Nils Muiznieks, the Council of Europe commissioner for human rights, has said that Greece’s neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party should be banned for carrying out a growing number of racist crimes against migrants.

Golden Dawn is not a normal democratic political party and should not be treated as such,” Muizneks has told the Financial Times.

A detailed report released by the Council of Europe on Tuesday on the human rights situation in Greece highlighted a series of incidents in which migrant workers have been killed, violated or humiliated by members of the notorious party.

The report describes Golden Dawn as a “neo-Nazi and violent political party” that should be isolated under legally binding international human rights conventions signed by Greece.

The Greek Reporter has reminded that Golden Dawn is led by Nikolaos Michaloliakos, who delivers fiery speeches denouncing immigrants and the government for supporting austerity measures. Michaloliakos has also espoused anti-Semitic, homophobic and ultra-religious stances.
