Bulgaria: Fight Poverty with Jobs, Not Prayers

Religious leaders from various faiths in Bulgaria held three days of special prayers requested by the country's president because of a spate of suicides.

It seems like Bulgaria really does need a miracle.

The cases of self-immolation, five of them fatal, are unprecedented for a European country.

Statistics show that Bulgaria's suicide rate is among the highest not only in Europe, but in the whole world. Not to mention surveys about gloomy demographics - we have a surfeit of them.

No matter how good the intentions of the president are, no matter how much the church wants to inspire hope among the desperate, prayers will not get us out of the economic, social and spiritual crisis we are stuck in.

We need jobs.

All measures should aim first and primarily at creating new jobs, revive the small towns where people are struggling to make end meet every single day. Most cases of self-immolation were a cry of despair - no work, no money, no hope for a normal life.

Of course, we need faith too. But here we are talking about people who simply find it hard to survive, literally.

Dear madoods,

Thank you for your post and for pointing out that the Bulgarians need jobs, and not prayers. I hope to see some more pists from you. Your post made me think about Joe Hill, a great American.

Joe Hill was executed by US Army firing squad on November 19, 1915, two years before the October Revolution. Here is his song, "Pie in the Sky":

G C G
Long-haired preachers come out every night
G D
Try to tell you what's wrong and what's right
G C G
But when asked how 'bout something to eat
G D G
They will answer in voices so sweet

Chorus
G C
You will eat, bye and bye
G D
In that glorious land above the sky
G C
Work and pray, live on hay
G D G
You'll get pie in the sky when you die

Verse
G C G
Working men of all countries, unite
G D
Side by side we for freedom will fight
G C G
When the world and its wealth we have gained
G D G
To the grafters we'll sing this refrain

Chorus
G C
You will eat, bye and bye
G D
When you've learned how to cook and how to fry
G C
Chop some wood, 'twill do you good
G D G
Then you'll eat in the sweet bye and bye

For goodness sake - we're in the 21st Century, in case The God Squad hadn't noticed! Ancient superstition and mumbo-jumbo ISN'T good, except to reassure the Faithful/Gullible that their plight will be better once they're in the next world - and to allow the rich and powerful to continue with their antics in this world.

"Die Religion ... ist das Opium des Volkes" - but some of das Folk can indeed be fooled all of the time.....

Stop the wealthy from getting their money out of Bulgaria to tax havens and encourage them to spend it here on infrastructure and rebuilding its industrial and agricultural base to give Bulgarians jobs instead of being forced to leave their homeland in search of work
