A team of experts of the European Commission will start a probe of Bulgaria's energy sector next week, according to a media statement of the Ministry of Economy, Energy and Tourism.

On April 9, the EC notified Bulgaria's caretaker government and the Ministry of Economy, Energy and Tourism that the probe would start next week.

The inspection team will be headed by representatives of the Directorate-General for Energy of the EC.

The EC experts will study the legal framework and the structural components of Bulgaria's energy sector to identify the most important problems.

During the probe, the EC experts will hold bilateral meetings with representatives of Bulgaria's Ministry of Economy, Energy and Tourism, the State Commission for Energy and Water Regulation (DKEVR), and managers of major companies in the energy sector.

The probe will focus on a number of key topics, including the powers of DKEVR and its independence, the role of the Bulgarian Energy Holding (BEH), the structure and the activities on the domestic electricity and gas markets, as well as the price-setting mechanisms in the energy sector.

The EC probe was agreed during the visit of caretaker Prime Minister Marin Raykov, caretaker Deputy Prime Minister Ekaterina Zaharieva and caretaker Economy and Energy Minister Asen Vasilev to Brussels in end-March.
