Bulgaria's former Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, is going to run on the ballots of his GERB party at the May 12 snap general election.

The statement was made by Borisov's former Deputy and former Interior Minister, Tsvetan Tsvetanov, speaking for TV7 on Saturday.

According to Tsvetanov, Borisov would top two of the longer ballots of the Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria party in most populated voting regions.

"He has resigned from the PM's post and it is natural he would lead not one, but two ballots, as the law allows it. GERB will win at least 100 seats in the next Parliament," said the former Minister.

He confirmed earlier information ex Finance Minister, Simeon Djankov, has not been nominated by any of the party's structures and would not run at the election.

Local structures, however, have nominated some of the former Ministers – of Regional Development, Lilyana Pavlova, of Agriculture, Miroslav Naydenov, and of Health, Desislava Atanasova, among others.

Tsvetanov assured the ballots are being arranged primarily by local GERB branches as they knew the candidates better.

GERB nomination criteria include: GERB members or followers, loyalty to the party, proven work and effort for the party's prestige and the benefit of Bulgarian people, not being discredited through former membership in other political formations, not owning assets and real estate acquired through criminal activities and in conflict of interests.

Nonpartisan individuals, who have clean public image and active civil position, can also be nominated.

Tsvetanov further stated the civil society in Bulgaria is now awakened and every politician must take this into account.

In commenting on the rule of GERB's Cabinet, he said fiscal stability has been its top priority, followed by good credit ratings to attract foreign investments, while if GERB is to win another term in office, these priorities will also include increasing income and taming youth unemployment.

On February 21, Bulgaria's Parliament approved the resignation of Prime Minister Boyko Borisov's GERB government amidst unprecedented since 1997 protest rallies against sky-high utility bills, monopolies, stagnation, corruption and wide-spread poverty, which later turned into a civil unrest and political demands.

Snap general election is to be held May 12, just two months ahead of the regular date in July.

President, Rosen Plevneliev, named the caretaker government on March 12.

Bulgaria's GERB Foresees 2nd Term in Office
Tsvetanov is correct. There is no alternative to GERB. Djankov had to go because his policies, however well meaning, were based on a totally repudiated, absolutely proven false theory of world economic reality that he learned in the US. At any rate, Boyko, Tsvetanov and company are here to stay. Who knows whether they steal more than others would?
Advice to the Bulgarian people: NEVER be left without a viable alternative. Sergey is some dead duck floating in a canal up there in Saint Petersburg.
