Bulgaria's caretaker Prime Minister, Marin Raykov, has invited Prof Mihail Konstantinov to join the election board at the Council of Ministries.

The news was reported by the government's press office, after the two have spoken on the phone.

It came just hours after Konstantinov, Mathematics Professor and Head of Bulgaria's State-owned IT company Information Services resigned as the firm was about to be eliminated from the competition for counting the ballots at the early elections.

"I decided to submit my resignation because I know that when it comes to organizing elections trust is the most important thing," Prof. Mihail Konstantinov announced on Friday morning.

The proposal for the removal of Information Services from the competition for counting the ballots at the early elections came after Konstantinov declared that if the alternative to the center-right GERB government was a tripartite coalition, he would "do everything possible to prevent this from happening."

The statement caused the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), the ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS), and right-wing Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB) to demand the removal of the IT firm from the election process.

Raykov also scorned Konstantinov, saying people holding public State posts should not announce their political "sympathies."

"This is a responsible and brave decision, expressing the position of a dignified and honest individual. Now, with his professionalism and knowledge, Prof Konstantinov can contribute a lot to the successful work of the election board," Raykov has said during the phone conversation.

The Board of Directors of Information Services is to vote on the resignation next week and to decide if it would withdraw from the bid to be the ballot counter.

The official decision of the caretaker Prime Minister on the matter is to be announced on March 26, the deadline for filing bids with the CEC for the tender for selecting a company to count the votes at the May 12 elections.

The election board at the Council of Ministries is to organize and carry out the snap election on May 12. It is a different structure from the planned public councils at some Ministries and the Cabinet.
