Bulgarian socialist MEP Iliyana Yotova has been elected Deputy Chair of the Special Committee on Organized Crime, Corruption and Money Laundering (CRIM) at the European Parliament.

The Special Committee on Organized Crime, Corruption and Money Laundering (CRIM) was set up in March 2012 further to the adoption, on 25 October 2011, of the European Parliament resolution on organized crime.

CRIM was established to study and analyze these criminal activities and to draw up a comprehensive, structured plan to combat them at EU level.

According to a media statement of the press office of Yotova, she takes over the post of Deputy Chair of CRIM at a decisive stage of the debate on the preparation of a legal framework on the fight against criminal activities in the EU.

Right after her appointment as Deputy Chair of CRIM, she presided over a sitting of the Commission during which a draft interim report featuring recommendations on action and initiatives to be taken in the sphere of combating organised crime, corruption, and money laundering was presented.

The report, which is to be ready by September, proposes a legal framework on combating misuse of European taxpayers' money.

The need for a common approach to the fight against organized crime presupposes a coordinated legal framework for the territory of the entire EU, greater bank transparency, the creation of EU public prosecutor's office and blacklists with companies suspected of misusing EU funds.

This goes some way in explaining her recent comments about the monitoring system for Bulgaria being inefficient. I can see plenty of work ahead for this women, merely by addressing some of the goals mentioned in this article. Then, if tangible results are forthcoming, then perhaps she will have grounds to criticize the existing framework. I think she needs to realize that, although not perfect, many other European countries do in fact serve justice on individuals who have been convicted of a crime. Organized crime and corruption does exist in all European countries to lesser or greater degrees, but generally it is largely contained within the background. Here in Bulgaria it is in your face!

tess, look at the facts - Iliyana Yotova's comrades have spent enough time in government in Bulgaria over the past 20 years to address this issue. Each time they have been kicked out of office the organized crime/corruption/mafia/graft/nepotism etc problem has been worse than when they were elected. So draw your own conclusions about how effective this latest charade will be...

Chuski, I'm optimistic things can change. Bulgaria have only been accountable to the European Union for a fraction of the time you specify. I think this is significant. Well, I like to think it is!. A growing civil consciousness will not, I believe, allow things to continue in the fashion of the past. Further to this, I do not believe the Union will tolerate inaction indefinitely. Any system can be dismantled and replaced with another. I truly believe Bulgaria should seek help with this task. The union, to me, holds the key, therefore there is a good opportunity for this lady to do good work, if of course she concentrates on what she is paid to do.
