Bulgaria: Bulgaria Drops to 57th in UN Human Development Index

Bulgaria has been ranked 57th in UN's Human Development Index, the organization's new report shows.

Thus, the Balkan country classifies among the countries perceived to have a high human development, the second highest developed group according to the index.

EU's poorest member state is ranked one spot behind Romania and one ahead of Saudi Arabia.

Bulgaria was 55th in the previous edition of the index.

The UNDP's Human Development Index (HDI) takes in life expectancy, education levels and income to paint a picture of the health of 187 nations.

Between 1980 and 2012 Bulgaria's HDI rose by 0.5% annually from 0.673 to 0.782 today, which gives the country a rank of 57 out of 187 countries with comparable data. The HDI of Europe and Central Asia as a region increased from 0.651 in 1980 to 0.771 today, placing Bulgaria above the regional average.

Norway retained its top position from last year, ahead of Australia and the US, while the Netherlands, Germany, New Zealand, Ireland, Sweden, Switzerland and Japan round out the top 10, in that order.

The Democratic Republic of Congo and Niger were at the back of the pack, ranking equal 186th.

According to the report, leading economies in the South such as China, India and Brazil will be the main drivers of economic growth and societal change for the first time in centuries. This growth, however, is not limited to these three countries, and the report spotlights more than 40 other countries that have made greater human development gains in recent decades than what was predicted.
