Sergey Stanishev, president of the party of European Socialists, declared his support for Hungary's left-wingers during a rally that gathered some 10 000 people in Hungary.
"Hungary needs a new direction," Stanishev declared, endorsing Hungarian Socialist Party leader Attila Mesterhazy.
The PES president strongly criticized Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, drawing a parallel between him and his homeland archrival, Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov.
"The Bulgarian version of Orban is Boyko Borisov," he said, as cited by Bulgarian news agencies.
"There is nothing worse than a populist that pretends to be part of the people but does nothing to defend the people's interests," he added.
Stanishev reminded that Borisov resigned amid massive protests in February.
"This is the fate of authoritarian leaders," he said.
