Bulgaria: German MP: Bulgarian Media Freedom in Precarious Condition

German MP Wolfgang Boernsen has expressed his concern over the lack of media pluralism in Bulgaria.

"Apparently, media freedom is being increasingly restricted," Boernsen told the Bulgarian National Radio's world news program on Saturday.

Boernsen noted that the existence of media monopolies in the Balkan country is particularly alarming.

"The European Commission is concerned with that fact, and I am, too," he said.

According to the German lawmaker, the concentration of media ownership has affected Bulgaria's privately owned media to a greater extent than the state-owned ones.

Bulgaria reached the shameful 87th place in the latest Reporters Without Borders Press Freedom Index, down 7 spots in comparison with 2012.

Last year, EU Digital Agenda Commissioner Nellie Kroes has sent a letter to Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov urging him to protect media freedom in the country.

Leaving aside German MP' rubbish du jour, I'd like to draw Your attention, dear Novinite, to Your "Bulgaria reached the shameful 87th place in the latest Reporters Without Borders Press Freedom". Look,
how can You take any seriously that bunch of clowns on USA' string?
Who finances RSF/RWB "reporters", who is the Master, who forces those klowns to place UK(with all my scepticism to UK media) under Jamaica, Estonia, Namibia, to place BG under Kosovo, Paraguay, Benin, Kuwait? The main financiers are "US organizations strictly linked with US foreign policy" (Robert Menard, Secretary General of RSF ), National Endovment for Democracy [NED], for example....yeah, that
very NED which founder Alan Weinstein honestly explained:
"A lot of what we [NED] do was done 25 years ago covertly by the CIA".
The "shameful place" from the really shameful structure is sooner
reward than a sin, dear Novinite.

Tania, if you do your research then you'll find that some of the most widely read newspapers/news sites in Bulgaria such as Novinite, Bivol, Galeria, 24 Chasa etc are actually controlled by the oligarchs and political parties who are most vehemently anti-Borisov. All have long standing links to the security services and establishment stretching back to Commie times which explains much of the propaganda and disinformation of the past 3 years.

Hi Chuski, yeah I found that out this morning after spending quite some time googling who owns all the various media in BG. It was quite an eye opener. It makes me ill to think of the claws that grip BG society.

I actually posted my comment before I did the research. So in hindsight I understand why he and GERB gets alot of negative and not impartial coverage.
