The first edition of Bulgaria's "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes" is held in the capital Sofia Saturday, one day after Bulgaria marked International Women's Day.

Men are going to walk in high heels to raise media and public awareness about the causes, effects and remedies for sexual assault and domestic violence.

The Bulgarian walk starts at noon from the intersection of boulevards "Patriarch Evtimiy" and "Vitosha" in downtown Sofia.

The organizers are the Bulgarian Red Cross, the Bulgarian Helsinki Committee, and Foundation Resource Center Bilitis.

They remind of the old saying about understanding somebody else only after walking a mile in their shoes, stressing every fourth Bulgarian woman fells pray to domestic violence while a quarter of million of women in the country have been subjected to sexual assault and/or harassment.

The organizers also say the goal of the event is to inform about the real situation in Bulgaria and about assistance available to the victims.

They have collected large-size women's shoes, but call on the participants to bring their own.
