Bulgaria: Bulgarian Protesters Put up Tent Camp near President HQ

Bulgarian protesters organized in a group under the name "Eagles' Bridge' are about to start setting up a tent protest camp in the garden in front of the presidency administration in downtown Sofia on Monday.

A day earlier the newly established group declared March 9 a day for "returning the State to the citizens."

They are calling a national conference on the same date, which will be held in Sofia's brand new multifunctional facility Arena Armeets and will begin at 1 pm.

The choice of the expensive venue already prompted many to question as to who is actually going to pay the bill.

The demonstrators have also announced the tent camp near the building of the Administration of the President will be permanent until their demands are met. These demands are: convening a new Grand General Assembly, amending the Election Code, and a moratorium on bank foreclosures and assets freezes.

Thousands of people blocked traffic on the key Eagles' Bridge intersection in the Bulgarian capital Sofia Sunday in another huge protest rally against monopolies, poverty and the political model of ruling the country.

The entire downtown area was blocked as well.

Other demands include eliminating monopolies, a majority ballot, not adjourning the Parliament; the President appointing a program government instead of a caretaker one; drafting a Civil Participation Bill providing a 50% civil quota in all institutions; returning 51% of the shares of power utilities to the State; closing the Bulgarian Energy Holding, BEH, for draining the energy sector, establishing a procedure to recall Members of the Parliament.

These demands, on their part, have stirred fears of an attempt to return to Communism as there have been calls for nationalization and full abolishment of the political system and of all parties.

On February 21, Bulgaria's Parliament approved the resignation of the government of Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, and his ruling Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria party, GERB, amidst the unprecedented since 1997 protest rallies.

Madness Everywhere!

Patients at a mental institution in Sofia are watching the evening news. Now and again a man sitting in the first row jumps up, clapping his hands happily and starts saying:“It’s so good I am here, not there! It’s so damn good!”Upon seeing that behavior for yet another night, a doctor tells his colleague:“I think that guy is perfectly ok already, it’s time to release him, don’t you think?”“Yes, definitely,” the other replies. ...read
