Bulgaria Frowns at Possible Olympic Demotion of Wrestling

The Bulgarian Ministry of Sports has expressed "disappointment" at the news of a possible exclusion of wrestling from the list of offical Olympic sports.

According to the proposal of the International Olympic Committee, wrestling, along with 7 other sports, such as baseball, karate and rock climbing, will compete to be the 26th Olympic sport, along with 25 core sports.

The proposal is to be voted at the International Olympic Committee's September session in Buenos Aires.

"The Ministry of Physical Education and Sports expresses its disappointment at the news that wrestling might be taken out from the program of the 2020 Summer Olympics," reads an official statement.

"Bulgaria needs one of its most succesful sports and it will not lose our support. Our 68 medals in wrestling, 16 of which gold, will always remain a part of our sport history," states the Bulgarian ministry.

It further adds it hopes that the proposal could be overturned when the time for its voting arrives.
