Bulgaria: Romania Launches Investigation into Horsemeat Scandal

The Romanian government is investigating if horsemeat discovered in beef products in Britain and France came from an abattoir in the country.

Romanian agricultural minister  Daniel Constantin has declared that the government will ask the proper Romanian authorities to report on whether the country supplied any horsemeat for export.

Romanian authorities would punish any violations if the reports are confirmed, Constantin stated, according to international media.

Meanwhile, BBC has informed that Anne McIntosh, chairwoman of the British Commons food and rural affairs committee, has called for a temporary ban on meat imports from the EU.

However,  the shadow environment secretary, Mary Creagh, said that was not the answer to the problem.

Horsemeat has been detected in some beef food products -- namely lasagne -- sold in France and Britain by the food giant, Findus. The company has begun pulling such products off the shelves of stores in Britain and France.

Romania Launches Investigation into Horsemeat Scandal
Romania has denied these claims, that would seem a bit premature as insufficient time has passed since the accusation was made for them to have carried out a full investigation. If criminal activity is to blame there will have been covered tracks that need exposing, not something to be done overnight. The Romanian PM would have been better to have said that all steps will be taken to get to the facts and truth and that he would make another statement when this had been done. To have flatly denied the accusation is very naive and insincere.

Romania Launches Investigation into Horsemeat Scandal
Peter darling get your facts straight. There where only 2 abatoires which sell horse meat as horse meat, not minced but carcases. The meat was processed (minced and then put in lasagna) somewhere else. In Romania there are 4 diferent certifications procedures vet controls etc. The chain is extensive Romaina-Cyprus-Netherlands- Luxemburg-France-UK ... it is easy to blame the weaker link but as we have sold horsemeat for decades to Italy and France and used it in our own salami sausages I see no point in labeling it difrerntly. Even the worst posible critics like The Daily Mirror or Guardian found the abatoirs spotless clean and at par if not better then any UK abatoirs.
