Bulgarian PM: Nuclear Referendum is Meaningless

Send to KindleBulgarian PM Boyko Borisov voted in Sunday's national referendum on nuclear energy, suggesting that the referndum has been in vain.
"This is the most expensive opinion poll in Bulgarian history," stated Borisov, who voted near his home in Bankya half an hour before polling stations close in 7 pm.
The referendum asks the question "Should nuclear energy be developed in the Republic of Bulgaria through the construction of a new nuclear power plant?"
The vote will be binding if the number of votes equals that of votes at the last parliamentary elections, 4,225,124, and if more than half of them vote "yes".
If less people vote on the referendum, but the turnout is over 20%, and more than half of the votes are positive, then the question is tabled for debate to parliament.
As of 5 pm, the turnout was officially estimated to be 17.4%, or some 1.2 M of Bulgaria's 6.9 M voters.
