General Stoimen Stoimenov, National Security Advisor of Bulgarian President, Rosen Plevneliev, has been employed by the Central Committee of the Bulgarian Communist Party during the Communist regime.
Bulgarian political scientist, Anton Todorov, showed in a broadcast of the Channel 3 TV documents proving Stoimenov's association with the Communist party.
In a report from 1989, General Dobri Dzhurov, Minister of Defense of the Communist government of Todor Zhivkov, had proposed to promote engineer Stoimen Stoimenov, instructor at the Social and National Security Department of the Central Committee of the Bulgarian Communist Party to Chief of the Political Unit of the Third Army.
Information and claims about Stoimenov's Communist past have been floating anonymously on the internet ever since Plevneliev appointed him National Security Advisor.
Todorov has now sent an official letter to the President, asking him to release Stoimenov from the post. In it, he calls on Plevneliev to grasp the absurdity of the case by drawing a parallel with how absurd it would sound if a senior Communist from the army unit of the German Communist Party would be appointed Security Advisor of the current German President.
General Stoimenov has graduated from the country's Military Academy, and has a PhD in Military Science since 1988. He has worked in the army for 40 years being promoted from one rang to the other all the way to Deputy Army Chief Commander.
Todorov insists that Stoimenov has always been a political officer carrying out the policies of the Bulgarian Communist Party.
The General told Channel 3 that he had only been "an ordinary instructor."
According to an investigative report of the site Bivol.bg, official partner of WikiLeaks for Bulgaria, Stoimenov's daughter Tanya is married to Samir Iskander Francis, an Iraqi citizen residing in Bulgaria.
Francis, also known as Ibrahim, is a former business associate of current Bulgarian Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov. He also has joined businesses with top Bulgarian criminal Zlatko Ivanov Baretata, who is convicted for illegal drugs trafficking, and with Russian mobster, Konstantin Tsiganov, who has been expelled from Bulgaria is a threat to national security.
