Bulgaria's Parliament passed Thursday final amendments to the Health Insurance Act.
The need for the lawmaking step emerged in mid-December when the Bulgarian Doctors Union, BLS, rejected the National Frame Agreement for 2013.
With the new amendments the Controlling Board of the National Health Insurance Fund, NZOK, has the authority to fund medical and dental activities, and medications that have not been listed in the National Frame Agreement.
This will happen on the proposal of the NZOK Head. Hospital intensive care, in-vitro procedures, and vaccines will be funded the same way.
Health Minister, Desislava Atanasova, lauded the amendments as beneficial for patients, but the opposition strongly attacked them for replacing BLS with NZOK, and ending health insurance in the country by circumventing the Frame Agreement and putting more burdens on the insured.
