The second bridge linking Bulgaria and Romania across the Danube has been nearly completed at 100%, the Spanish construction firm FCC announced Sunday.

Even though construction works on the adjacent infrastructure of the Vidin-Calafat bridge can continue in the spring, the bridge would open the way between the two countries by the end of November 2012, the company said.

“This is the longest bridge over the Danube river. It not only connects Bulgaria and Romania, but will also provide Internet connection, electricity and other communications. The biggest challenge for us was digging the foundations of the bridge 80 meters below the bottom of the river," commented Julio Ruiz, deputy head of the construction site.

The bridge will make possible for passengers to go from Vidin to Calafat within minutes. It will also reduce considerably the time for getting from Asia to Central and Western Europe.

Bulgarian PM Boyko Borisov and Romanian PM Victor Ponta will be the first to officially walk through the currently finalized Danube Bridge 2 next Wednesday, October 24.

EU Regional Policy Commissioner Johannes Hahn has also been invited to be present at Wednesday's event.

"The bridge is almost completed, you can walk through, so we agreed to do that with PM Ponta," said Borisov at a press conference in Bucharest a week ago.

Borisov arrived in Bucharest last Wednesday to take part in the congress of Europe's rightists, the EPP, of which his GERB party is member.

"So the two parties - the Romanian Socialists and the Bulgarian rightists - are going to come together on the bridge. Parties are parties, but we also have pragmatic tasks to jointly solve," added he.

Borisov and Ponta have agreed that the company to manage the facility will be based in Sofia.
