Some 8000 people living near a Danube bridge in Hungary's Budapest have been evacuated, as demolition experts prepare to remove a half ton bomb from World War II.

The bomb was discovered by accident on Wednesday under a main railroad bridge over the Danube, and identified on Thursday as a US-made bomb.

According to Xinhua, Hungarian Defense Ministry spokesperson Melinda Varkonyi said on Thursday that the bomb has two intact detonators, adding a specially equipped anti-mine riverboat will raise the bomb and demolition experts will remove the detonators before the explosive device is taken away.

Hungary, being a Nazi ally during World War II, was bombed heavily by US, British and Soviet forces during the final months of the war, The Voice of Russia has reminded.
