Montenegro's ruling coalition won the most votes in a parliamentary election on Sunday and appears certain to remain in power.

The European Montenegro coalition led by Milo Djukanovic has won 45.6% of the vote, or 39 out of 81 seats in the future parliament, according to the results released by the monitoring group which counted nearly 95% of the ballots.

The major opposition party, Democratic Front, was second with 23.7%, or 20 parliamentary seats, followed by the pro-Serb Socialist People's party with 10.5% of the vote, or nine seats.

"As of tomorrow, we will start work on the creation of a government that will continue to lead Montenegro on its path to European ... integration and work on improving the living standards of every Montenegrin citizen," Djukanovic has told supporters, as cited by EurActiv.

It is still unclear whether Djukanovic, who has served Montenegro's President or Prime Minister for most of the past two decades, intends to pursue the Prime Minister's post once again.

Montenegro is expected to become the next country to join the EU after Croatia.
