Bulgaria's ruling party GERB has nominated Deputy Chair of the Bulgarian Parliament Anastas Anastasov to sit on the country's Constitutional Court.
As most other GERB MPs, Anastasov entered politics when he was elected to Parliament in 2009. He has been serving ever since as the deputy of Parliament Chair Tsetska Tsacheva from the deputy chair quota of the GERB party.
Bulgaria's Constitutional Court has a total of 12 sitting members; 1/3 of those are changed every three years, with the Parliament being entitled to elect two of them, and the President and the Judges from the Supreme Court of Cassation and the Supreme Administrative Court being entitled to one appointment each.
In addition GERB's nominee, three other nominees will be vying to become appointed to Bulgaria's Constitutional Court from the Parliament's quota – Tatyana Varbanova - nominated by the opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party, Ekaterina Mihaylova - nominated by the opposition rightist Blue Coalition, and Veneta Markovska - nominated by independent MPs.
Wednesday was the last day for the MPs to present their nominations. The four nominees will be subject to a public hearing on October 31, 2012, and two of them will be selected by a public vote.
The four Bulgarian Constitutional Court justices whose terms are set to expire in October 2012 are Evgeni Tanchev, Emiliya Drumeva, Georgi Petkanov (former Interior and Justice Minister), and Vladislav Slavov.
On September 24, 2012, the judges from the Supreme Administrative Court and the Supreme Court of Cassation appointed Georgi Angelov to the Constitutional Court.
The fourth new member of Bulgaria's Constitutional Court is to be picked by President Rosen Plevneliev who recently refused to comment on reports that he planned to appoint outgoing Chief Prosecutor Boris Velchev.
