Bulgaria's Parliament has turned down a request for a hearing of Prime Minister Boyko Borisov on issues related to the Belene NPP project.

The hearing was requested at the beginning of Wednesday's sitting of Parliament by Ivan Kostov, leader of the Democrats for String Bulgaria (DSB) party and Co-Chair of the Blue Coalition

The request for a hearing was turned down at a vote and a subsequent revote.

Kostov had prepared four questions to Borisov, including why the Prime Minister failed to conduct the mandatory activities for terminating the Belene NPP project in six months, why the final terms for the termination of the project were not prepared and why the Bulgarian Nuclear Regulatory Agency did not stop the licensing of the N-plant.

Bulgaria's Parliament also revoked a proposal of Mihail Mikov and Petar Kurumbashev from the left-wing Coalition for Bulgaria to include a draft decision cancelling the decision for terminating the construction of the Belene NPP on this week's agenda.

The proposal was backed by 37 MPs, 14 MPs voted against and 78 abstained.

The Bulgarian government scrapped the Belene NPP project in end-March 2012, declaring it economically unfeasible.

The pro-Belene Bulgarian Socialist Party then launched a petition for a referendum on the fate of the Russian-Bulgarian project.

The inspection of the petition recently concluded, with 543 639 valid signatures, enough to make the vote irreversible.

Six months after the government decided to cancel the Belene NPP project, a private investor showed interest in the construction of the N-plant.

The largely unknown US enterprise Global Power Consortium's interest in the construction of the 2000 MW Belene was made public in Sofia last Wednesday by a representative of the entity, Samuel Reddy, who said he had presented an offer to Bulgarian Minister of Economy, Energy, and Tourism Delyan Dobrev.
