The Bulgarian Jewish community in New York is to take part in marking the 70th anniversary since the Balkan country's historic rescue of 50 000 Jews from Nazi concentration camps in 1943.

On Monday, Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev met with representatives of the Bulgarian Jewish community in the city.

Plevneliev said that marking the historic anniversary next year will be "his highest priority."

It was recently announced that the governments of Bulgaria and Israel are about to plan a joint program to mark the historic anniversary.

Even though Bulgaria was an ally of Nazi Germany in World War II, 50 000 Bulgarian Jews were not deported to the Nazi death camps in 1943 thanks to mass civil protests, active stance by 43 Bulgarian MPs, and Tsar Boris III's resistance to Hitler's demands for deportation.

Plevneliev also discussed his upcoming visit to Israel with the Bulgarian Jewish community in New York, the Bulgarian National Television informs. The Bulgarian Presidnet expects major Israeli investments in his country in the fields of high technologies and innovations.
