More than 100 protests against the natural gas drilling process known as fracking have been scheduled to take place around the world on Saturday.
Bulgarians gathered in the Northeastern town of Dobrich on Saturday to protest against the potential use of the hydraulic fracturing technology in the country.
The protesters symbolically handed out loaves of bread to passers-by, local media say.
Dobrich is located in Southern Dobrudzha, a grain-growing region known as "the granary of Bulgaria." Locals fear that hydraulic fracturing may cause irreversible damage to its vital wheat production.
The Bulgarian parliament adopted on January 18 an indefinite moratorium on hydraulic fracturing. Thus, Bulgaria became the second EU country to ban test drilling for shale gas using the metod. The decision followed a wave of environmental protests.
On January 17, the Bulgarian government revoked a shale gas exploration permit granted to Chevron for deposits in Northeastern Bulgaria, citing the insufficient proof of the environmental safety of hydraulic fracturing.
More than 100 protests against the natural gas drilling process known as fracking have been scheduled to take place around the world on Saturday, as the first coordinated international day of action against fracking is marked.
