Bulgaria's Foreign Minister Nikolay Mladenov has spoken out in favor of preserving the Cohesion Policy of the European Union during a meeting with his German counterpart Guido Westerwelle in Berlin.
"There can be no true integration without overcoming the great differences among European Union member states, and for that reason the Cohesion Policy is at the center of European integration," Mladenov told Westerwelle in the capital of Germany.
Mladenov's statement comes amidst ongoing debates about the Regional policy of the European Union, also referred as Cohesion Policy, is a policy for improving the economic well-being of regions in the EU and avoiding regional disparities; more than one third of the EU's budget is devoted to its Cohesion Policy.
During his talks with Westerwelle, he also noted that a project such as the Sofia Metro – which is almost entirely funded by the EU – "shows how effective and efficient the EU Cohesion Policy can be and how everyone can benefit from it".
Westerwelle in turn has emphasized the need to invest in projects that not only generate jobs but also promote sustainable economic growth.
Bulgaria's Foreign Minister was on a one-day working visit in Berlin Friday at the invitation of his German counterpart.
Mladenov and Westerwelle discussed the future of the EU, the new Multiannual Financial Framework (2014-2020), as well as the overcoming of the debt crisis, the press service of the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry said.
They agreed to hold bilateral consultations on the situation in the Middle East and North Africa, talks about the new EU Multiannual Financial Framework and the future of European integration, the ministry added.
