Bulgaria: Food Donations for the Regional Leader

Bulgaria's high officials have been rather excited about the country's economic future recently.

Last week, Prime Minister Boyko Borisov claimed that Bulgaria "won't be EU's poorest member state in 2013," a statement that can only come true if the country suddenly leapfrogs several much more developed economies (or if an even poorer country suddenly joins the bloc).

President Rosen Plevneliev declared that the country's aim is to become "a regional leader."

Meanwhile, the European Union has increased five times its assistance for poorest Bulgarians over the economic crisis.

Over 300 000 Bulgarians will receive free food purchased by Brussels this year. The campaign started on Monday and reached Sofia on Thursday.

The contrast between the Bulgarian leaders' delusions of (future) greatness and the hundreds of thousands of starving Bulgarians is grotesque and begs comparison to North Korea, although the latter's aspirations are more sinister.

Nearly 27% of households in Bulgaria live below the poverty line now.

State leaders should not be allowed to lose themselves in dreams while their struggling nations resort to food donations.
