Fiorentina sporting director, Daniele Prade, has stated his club will ask Bulgarian star striker Dimitar Berbatov to reimburse them for travel expenses that were spent on him in the closing days of the summer transfer market.
The news was reported by the sports portal Goal.com.
At the end of August, the now-former Manchester United player Berbatov was on a flight to Florence to sign with Fiorentina when it emerged that he had received an offer from Juventus while other football clubs in Europe were also showing interest in him.
He never even reached Florence for negotiations. In the aftermath, Fiorentina blasted the Bulgarian, saying he did not deserve their jersey, and accused the Turin-based Juventus of trying to steal the player under their nose.
Juventus Director General Giuseppe Marotta rejected the accusations, saying his team made the offer only after learning that Berbatov has decided to not join Fiorentina.
At the end, Berbatov joined the UK Fulham football club.
Apparently Fiorentina is still furious over the incident with Prade telling the Italian Radio Blu: "We will ask his attorney for a refund for the tickets paid."
"I'm glad he did not arrive in the end. It is better this way. In my 25 year career in this business, I have never seen anything like this," he continued, stressing the club focused all effort on attracting Berbatov which prevented them from pursuing other star players" said he.
Prade stressed the team still has great players such as Luca Toni and Stevan Jovetic.
In the aftermath of the saga, Bulgarian and UK media confirmed Marotta's explanation that Berbatov wanted to stay in England because of his family, in what was a life choice not a matter of money. There are a number of unconfirmed reports that his wife Elena did not want to move to Italy and preferred to live in London. One of the cited reasons is that she might be pregnant for the second time.
