As France temporarily cut the tax on fuel products, the Bulgarian cabinet made it clear it won't follow suit, throwing the blame on Brussels.

Speaking on Wednesday morning, Economy and Energy Minister Delyan Dobrev proposed that the European Union adjusts the fuel tax to the living standards of a given member country.

"I will raise the issue and insist on new fuel tax rates at the very first meeting with my colleagues in Brussels," Dobrev stressed.

Bulgaria had planned to follow France's example in a bid to counter the hike in fuel prices, but it can't because the fuel tax there is still below the EU's minimum rate.

Politicians and analysts have commented that it is not fair to make poor countries levy the same tax rate on fuel as in rich countries, saying fuel prices are curtailing the freedom of movement of people and goods.
