Bulgarian 'Cocaine Ship' Sailors Won't See Relatives for Months

Crime | August 24, 2012, Friday // 11:00

The 21 Bulgarian sailors busted last week in Spain after a ship carrying 3 tons of cocaine was captured will probably have to wait at least three months to meet with their relatives, Bulgarian Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov stated Friday.

Tsvetanov pointed out that efforts are being put so that the sailors would be able to meet with their families as soon as possible.

Only a part of the crew was involved in the huge cocaine shipment operation, the Interior Minister reiterated, adding that the main organizers of the operation were from Spain and Columbia, while Bulgarians dealt with organizing the transport.

Despite Bulgaria's hopes for a domestic trial, it will be Spain that will be trying 21 Bulgarian sailors on drug trafficking charges, it was made clear on Thursday.

Also on Thursday, Spanish authorities released more detailed data about the St. Nikolay cocaine ship affair.

According to their information, the Bulgarian vessel – SV Nikolay - was loaded with cocaine between July 20 and July 24, 2012, in Venezuela.
