Unemployment Rate in Bulgaria Climbs to 12.3% in Q2, 2012

In the second quarter of 2012, unemployed people in Bulgaria were 409.5 thousand, including 242.7 men and 166.8 thousand women, according to data of the National Statistical Institute (NSI).

The number of unemployed went up by 10% as compared to the second quarter of 2011.

The unemployment rate increased by 1.1 percentage points to 12.3% in Q2, 2012.

The unemployment rate went up by 1.5 percentage point for men and by 0.7 percentage points for women, reaching 13.7% and 10.8% respectively.

The number of long-term unemployed was 227.9 thousand, or  55.6% of all unemployed.

The number of long-term unemployed increased by 9.8% as compared to Q2, 2011.

The long-term unemployment rate increased by 0.6 percentage points to 6.9% in the second quarter of 2012, up by 0.9 percentage points for men and by 0.3 percentage points for women, reaching 7.7% for men and 5.9% for women.

In the second quarter of 2012, 338.5 thousand (82.7%) of all unemployed had previous employment experience, while 71.0 thousand (17.3%) were looking for their first job.

The unemployment rate for the population aged 15 - 29 was 20.7% (22.7% for men and 18.0% for women), up by 1.7 percentage points as compared to Q2, 2011.

The increase was entirely due to the rising unemployment rate among men in this age group (by 3.2 percentage points).

In the second quarter of 2012, the total number of employed persons (aged 15 years and over) was 2 913.7 thousand, representing 46.2% of population in the same age group.

Compated to Q2, 2011, the number of employed declined by 32.3 thousand (by 1.1%), while the share of employed among people aged 15+ remained almost unchanged.

The employment rate for people aged 15 - 29 was 36.4% (40.1% for men and 32.5% for women).

The employment rate for people aged 20 - 64 (an Europe 2020 indicator) remained the same as in the second quarter of 2011 - 62.6% (65.4% for men and 59.8% for women), but at the same time went up by 0.4 percentage points for women and decreased by 0.4 percentage points for men.

The number of employed people aged 55 - 64 years was 481.3 thousand, or 46.0% of population of the same age group, with an annual increase in women's employment in the age group.
