The level of the Lower Danube keeps declining in a repeat of last year's late summer situation that hurt tremendously the commercial navigation of the second largest European river.

The Danube level at Bulgaria's Silistra dropped by 12 cm in the past 24 hours, down to 85 cm, the Bulgarian navigation authorities announced Monday, reminding that just two days ago, the river's level was at 102 cm.

Ships and barges are already transporting reduced freight volumes in the Bulgarian-Romanian section of the Danube in order to avoid getting stuck somewhere along the river.

The shoots that have formed near Bulgaria's Belene, and the islands of Vardim and Batin, have already started to hurt substantially commercial shipping; over 20 problem spots in the Bulgarian section of the Danube are under monitoring, according to the authorities.

Just several days ago, a cruise ship with foreign tourists got stuck briefly near Bulgaria's Svishtov, and was pulled out by another vessel, Darik Radio says in a report.
