The UN Security Council has ordered a termination of its monitoring mission in Syria, starting Sunday.

"The conditions for the continuation of the mission were not fulfilled," said French UN envoy and current Security Council chair Gerard Aro.

At the same time, the UN has decided to continue its political office in Damascus, a decision coordinated with Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed disappointment regarding a failure on the part of the Security Council to pass a resolution denouncing a recent terrorist attack in Damascus directed at a hotel where UN monitors are residing.

At the same time, Russian UN envoy Vitaly Churkin has called on the international community, especially Saudi Arabia and Iran, to urge the warring parties in Syria to stop hostilities.

Churkin has proposed a meeting of the international Action Gruop of Syria to be held in New York Friday to adopt steps to pacify the civil war torn country.
