The prices of the most common fuels have hiked to new record level at Bulgarian gas stations.

On Monday, the A95 gas reached the unprecedented price of BGN 2.71 per liter (1 EUR = 1.9558 BGN) in the gas stations of Greek fuel trade Eko Petroleum.

The price of diesel has remained only slightly lower – BGN 2.68 per liter.

Lukoil's gas stations in Bulgaria started to sell a liter of A95 gas for BGN 2.70, while its diesel costs BGN 2.67 .

Until late on Sunday, the other fuel retailers in Bulgaria kept their prices at BGN 2.64-68 per liter of A 95, but are also expected to raise their prices.

Thus, fuel prices in Bulgaria have reached the record levels from March 21, 2012, when they hit BGN 2.70 for A 95 gas, and BGN 2.73 for diesel.

The new hike is owing to the growth of wholesale prices in Bulgaria's only oil refinery, Lukoil Neftochim Burgas.

Fuel producers, importers, and traders in Bulgaria are often criticized by NGOs and citizens launching protest rallies of abusing their position by forming secret agreements and de facto cartels to drive fuel prices up; however, in a recent probe Bulgaria's Competition Protection Commission stated it has found no evidence of a fuel cartel.
