Bulgaria's Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, who is on an official trip to Great Britain, met Wednesday with several of the country's athletes taking part in the 2012 London Olympics.

Despite earlier announcements that his agenda would be so busy that he would not have any time for the sports events, Borisov went to the Bulgarian Embassy in London to meet for coffee those who were free from practice and competitions Wednesday morning.

The meeting was attended by boxer Tervel Pulev, female sprinter, Ivet Lalova, legendary male gymnast, Yordan Yovchev, the coach of the national men volleyball team, Nayden Naydenov, and the President of the Wrestling Federation, Valentin Yordanov, among others.

Borisov found a minute or two to speak personally with everyone and to offer praise and encouragement.

He wished all who are continuing their participation in the Games great luck, stressing medals were important because legal amendments will allow their holders to receive life-time cash awards.

At the end of June, the cabinet proposed to increase the monthly awards for medal winners, while for the gold they will be equal to three minimum monthly wages, compared to the current one monthly wage (BGN 290).

The outstanding performance of the volleyball team was one of the central topics of the talks.

"When I saw David (referring to UK counterpart David Cameron) yesterday, he told me that Bulgarians display a terrific play," Borisov said upon entering the room, saying he would cheer them, even though he would not be able to stay for their much-anticipated game against Germany Wednesday evening.

The PM stressed that the government is upping every year the financing of Bulgarian sport and presented the projects for repairs and construction of sports facilities across the country along with investments in different sports tournaments.

He explained that the cabinet is looking to secure funding in the amount of EUR 100 000 for equipment of an artistic gymnastics training facility in the Black Sea city of Varna for Yovchev (who is also the President of the National Artistic Gymnastics Federation), and announced that the Volleyball Federation will receive rights to manage the "Hristo Botev" hall in Sofia.

Borisov hugged and kissed Lalova, Pulev, Yovchev, Naydenov, and the Head of the Bulgarian Olympic Delegation, Lyubo Ganev. He wished Pulev, who is the only certain Bulgarian medal holder, great success in his next match.

The Chair of the Bulgarian Olympic Committee, BOC, Stefka Kostadinova and the Minister of Physical Education and Sports, Svilen Neykov, were also present.
