Daniel Mitov Ready for Foreign Minister Role Amid Geopolitical Test in Bulgaria
Daniel Mitov, Deputy Chairman of GERB, has expressed his readiness to assume the position of Acting Foreign Minister
Opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party leader Sergey Stanishev has lashed out at the news that socialist Pernik mayor Rositsa Yanakieva will be investigated for abuse of earthquake funds.
"This is only the latest case in which the ruling center-right GERB party unscrupulously pressure mayors from the opposition," said Stanishev Thursday.
The attack on Yankieva came from GERB municipal councilors, who accuse the mayor of mismanaging BGN 2.7 M allotted for repair works following the 5.8-degree earthquake that hit Pernik May 22, and spending them in an "insane way."
"This is the ruling party's tactics of covering up their own powerlessness to fulfill their commitments to an area hit by a natural disaster," said Stanishev.
"Instead of letting mayor Yanakieva do her job, they are staging ruthless attacks against her," added the socialist leader.
According to Stanishev, funds given by the government for repair works in the Pernik area are inadequate and the latest developments will make matters even worse for local residents.
