Romania's opposition called on its supporters to boycott the upcoming referendum on whether to impeach suspended President Traian Basescu.

The move aims at invalidating the referendum's outcome, as Basescu would be reinstated as President if the 50% turnout threshold is not reached.

Vasile Blaga, President of the oppositional Democratic Liberal Party, has described Sunday;s referendum "a masquerade" staged by ruling left-wing Social Liberal Union, according to EurActiv.

Opinion polls show that a majority of Romanians are likely to vote to remove Basescu from office.

The socialist-liberal majority in Parliament supporting Prime Minister Victor Ponta's cabinet recently launched an impeachment procedure against Basescu for allegedly overstepping his powers.

The move drew much criticism from European Union officials and affected negatively the country's latest Co-operation and Verification Mechanism report.
