The number of people convicted of tax crimes in 2011 has tripled in two years, according to the annual report of Bulgaria's prosecuting authority, as cited by the National Revenue Agency (NRA).

In 2011, a total of 1979 people were found guilty of tax evasion offences, about three times more than in 2009 and 56% more than in 2010.

According to the report, the number of initiated and completed pre-trial proceedings for tax    crimes also registered a significant increase in 2011.

Acquittals on tax evasion charges were less than 3% during the reporting period.

According to the NRA, the main reason for the improved results was the increased activity of the tax administration, which submitted tip-offs about such offences.

The NRA reminds that in the past four years, each district city in Bulgaria has had a coordination center consisting of NRA officials, representatives of law-enforcement bodies and the prosecutor's office.

The main functions of the so-called coordination centers include discussions on tip-offs about tax crimes, evidence gathering and exchange of expert opinions on Bulgaria's Tax Procedure Code and Penal Procedure Code.
